In accordance with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, may God protect him, the UAE responded immediately to the humanitarian call of duty following the devastating earthquake that struck Syria and Türkiye on February 6, 2023. The response continued for five consecutive months under Operation Chivalrous Knight 2. On July 13, 2023, the Joint Operations Command of the Ministry of Defense concluded Operation Chivalrous Knight 2, which resulted in the rescue of dozens of people from under the rubble and the treatment of 13,500 injured individuals. In addition, humanitarian assistance totaling 15,200 tons was delivered through an air bridge that included the organization of 260 flights, carrying 6,912 tons of urgent relief supplies, including tents, basic food items, and medicines. A further 8,252 tons of humanitarian aid were transported using four cargo ships to deliver relief and reconstruction materials to the affected areas.

Support for the people of Syria continued through the Emirates Red Crescent, with all tasks and activities handed over to the organization’s team operating in the country. This included the completion of housing construction for the first project, comprising 1,000 residential units, as well as moving forward with contracts for the second project, which includes 500 residential units along with a clinic building, a mosque, and a commercial complex. Continuous provision of food supplies, medical equipment, and medicines was maintained, alongside assessments of the needs of various sectors through multiple initiatives aimed at providing psychological and social support.

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, may God protect him, ordered the allocation of USD 100 million to support those affected by the earthquake. This initiative included USD 50 million for the brotherly Syrian people and an additional USD 50 million for the friendly Turkish people. In the same context, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, may God protect him, directed the provision of urgent humanitarian assistance to the brotherly Syrian people valued at AED 50 million, to support those affected by the most severe earthquake the country has witnessed in decades.
